Small Grants Competition

Read all directions carefully to ensure your application is considered. Watch this video for tips on how to submit a successful application.

Funding available

You may apply for a maximum of $2,500 for your initiative. All applications must provide a budget breakdown.

Who can apply?

  • Individuals, community associations, schools, or not-for-profit organizations (no applications from commercial enterprises or political parties)
  • Applications must be from Canada (funding is for initiatives in Canada only)

What will HRI fund?

  • All initiatives must be linked to, and reference, a human right, such as those enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

What we will NOT FUND

Funding cannot be used for:

  • Donations (e.g. to purchase food for food banks or for gift certificates)
  • Travel to meetings
  • Bursaries or scholarships
  • Funds or prizes to other individuals or organizations
  • Initiatives that take place outside of Canada
  • Student research or conference/workshop fees

HRI reserves the right not to award grants if no suitable applications are received.

How do I apply?

  • Simple! Read the paragraphs above and watch the video to see if your idea is a ‘fit’ for HRI’s Small Grants Competition. Your application may be submitted in English or French using the 'Apply here' button below. Complete the online form AND SUBMIT
  • Send your ideas - You know best how you can make a difference

When will I know if my application is successful?

HRI will review applications every few months and inform all applicants whether or not they have been successful.

Next steps

  • All submitted applications are read carefully and reviewed by a committee before grants are awarded.
  • You will be notified if your application was successful or not successful
  • HRI will post the names of the successful initiatives on the website.
  • A brief report (one paragraph in length) will be expected from you upon completion. We may post it to the HRI website.
