Small Grants Competition

The next intake deadline for this Competition is Friday, October 24th, 2025.

Funding available

You may apply for a maximum of $3,500 for your initiative. All applications must provide a budget breakdown.

Who can apply?

  • Individuals, community associations, schools, or not-for-profit organizations (no applications from commercial enterprises or political parties)
  • Applications must be from Canada (funding is for initiatives in Canada only)

What will HRI fund?

  • All initiatives must be linked to, and clearly reference, a human right or rights such as those enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

What we will NOT FUND

  • <span data-metadata="">Gift certificates
  • Bursaries or scholarships
  • Awards or prizes
  • Student research
  • Conference/workshop fees, or costs related to travel or accommodation for conferences

  • Simple! Read the paragraphs above and watch the video to see if your idea is a ‘fit’ for HRI’s Small Grants Competition. Your application may be submitted in English or French using the 'Apply here' button below. Complete the online form AND SUBMIT
  • Send your ideas - You know best how you can make a difference

When will I know if my application is successful?

HRI will review applications within a month after the posted closing date and inform all applicants whether or not they have been successful.

Next steps

  • All submitted applications are read carefully and reviewed by a committee before grants are awarded.
  • You will be notified if your application was successful or not successful
  • HRI will post the names of the successful initiatives on the website.
  • A brief report (one paragraph in length) will be expected from you upon completion. We may post it to the HRI website.
